Iran pushes modern irrigation adoption as agricultural challenges grow. Moreover, Deputy Agriculture Minister for Water and Soil, Safdar Niazi Shahraki, emphasized its importance. He said modern irrigation ensures food security and efficient water use. Only 40 percent of Iran’s agricultural land uses these systems, compared to 60 percent in Europe. Shahraki highlighted that science and technology form the foundation for economic development. Therefore, the agricultural sector cannot reach its goals without advanced irrigation techniques. “If we fail to adopt this technology, we risk harming productivity and food security,” he warned.

In addition, he explained that improving productivity requires substantial investment. Farmers and authorities must apply the latest knowledge and technology to maximize efficiency. He noted that Iranian fields rely heavily on artificial irrigation, while European fields benefit more from rainfall. As a result, modern irrigation is especially critical in Iran. Shahraki outlined plans to expand technology use on farms. For instance, smart irrigation systems can optimize water consumption and increase crop yields. By adopting efficient methods, Iran can reduce water waste and meet growing population demands.

The emphasis on modern irrigation aligns with national strategies to combat resource scarcity. Water shortages increasingly affect agriculture, thus threatening local economies and food availability. Officials say embracing modern irrigation is crucial for sustainable agriculture and resilience. Experts support these initiatives. They note smart systems save water and improve soil health. Sensors, automated controls, and real-time data help farmers make informed decisions. These technologies ultimately boost productivity and profitability.

Looking ahead, authorities plan to increase irrigated land equipped with modern systems. Additionally, they aim to provide financial support, training, and technical assistance. By doing so, Iran hopes to narrow the technology gap with Europe. Ultimately, modern irrigation represents a crucial shift for Iran. With proper investment, education, and technology, the country can improve food security, preserve water, and foster sustainable agricultural growth.
