The acclaimed Iranian documentary film The Long Winter won the Best Film Award at the Eurasia.Doc Festival. Director Hassan Jafari received the prestigious international recognition during the official closing ceremony in Minsk. Furthermore, festival organizers held screenings across Belarus and Russia throughout the week-long cultural event.
The 44-minute documentary examines the daily lives of an elderly couple residing in rural northern Iran. The personal narrative focuses on severe domestic challenges stemming from the wife’s progressing illness. Consequently, the elderly couple faces a difficult personal choice between remaining in their village and relocating to an urban area.
Farzaneh Fathi wrote the screenplay, while Farahbakhsh Farhadnia handled the documentary’s cinematography. In addition, acclaimed filmmaker Yasser Talebi edited the final production alongside producer Yasser Faryadras. Furthermore, the Nehzat Media Arts Center supported the project in collaboration with national documentary cinema centers.
The 10th edition of the international festival featured 361 original submissions from 14 participating nations. Organizers selected 34 final documentaries to compete across categories covering history, social issues, and human struggles. Therefore, Jafari’s international victory highlights the continued global influence and artistic strength of Iranian nonfiction cinema.
Moving forward, international distributors plan to screen the award-winning documentary at foreign film festivals later this year. Domestic cultural organizations continue supporting independent documentary directors who explore universal human experiences through localized narratives. Ultimately, Jafari’s successful festival run reinforces the strong global reputation of contemporary Iranian cinema.
