Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, during an upcoming regional summit in Turkmenistan. Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov announced the diplomatic engagement ahead of the gathering in Ashgabat. The bilateral talks will take place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States meeting. Consequently, the high-level engagement underscores continued diplomatic ties between Moscow and Tehran through regional platforms.
The Commonwealth of Independent States summit will run from Thursday through Friday in the capital. However, attending heads of state will hold the main political program on Friday. Nine regional leaders have confirmed their participation in the upcoming diplomatic gathering. Specifically, leaders from Russia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan will attend. In addition, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will join the scheduled multilateral talks.
For the first time in CIS history, the organization’s leaders have invited Iran’s president to participate in an expanded format. This invitation marks an important development in regional Eurasian diplomatic engagement. Historically, the post-Soviet bloc has primarily included the leaders of former Soviet republics in its top-level meetings. Therefore, Pezeshkian’s participation expands the geographic and diplomatic scope of the gathering.
The bilateral dialogue comes amid evolving geopolitical developments across Eurasia and the broader Middle East. During their meeting, the two leaders will review trade agreements and strategic issues. Furthermore, the two leaders will address regional security, economic cooperation, and infrastructure investments. Consequently, international observers will closely monitor the outcome of the discussions for broader regional implications.
Looking ahead, the Ashgabat meeting could support closer cooperation among the participating countries. Iran’s inclusion in expanded CIS discussions may also create opportunities for future institutional cooperation. Subsequently, officials from both countries will continue working on strategic economic partnership initiatives. Ultimately, the meeting highlights growing diplomatic engagement between Iran, Russia, and other Eurasian countries.
