Iran Tourist Card has officially launched to improve visitor safety and simplify travel payments across the country. The initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, aims to reduce cash-related risks while promoting a modern, digital approach to spending in Iran.
During a recent cabinet session, Minister Ezzatollah Salehi-Amiri explained that the Iran Tourist Card offers a practical solution to long-standing challenges faced by foreign travelers. He noted that, previously, visitors had to carry large sums of cash, which often led to security concerns. Now, however, the new card system allows tourists to make safe and convenient transactions throughout their stay.
Moreover, the Central Bank of Iran worked closely with the ministry to create a transparent financial framework for the card. After several months of coordination, both institutions agreed that the exchange rate would be determined daily through mutual agreement. Although this rate is slightly below the open market level, the government believes the added security and convenience outweigh the small difference.
Currently, the Iran Tourist Card is operational at all major international airports. However, authorities have already announced plans to extend the system to land border crossings. This expansion will allow tourists entering through neighboring countries to enjoy the same level of service. According to officials, the second phase is already in development and will launch soon.
On November 5, the Central Bank officially confirmed the pilot phase of the project. This allows foreign visitors and non-residents to purchase Iranian currency legally and use it within the country for approved transactions.
