Iran and the United States began the third round of indirect nuclear negotiations in Geneva on Thursday. Both sides are continuing diplomatic efforts to address Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is leading the Iranian delegation. The team arrived earlier at the Embassy of Oman in Geneva. Oman is mediating the talks between Tehran and Washington. The discussions focus only on nuclear issues and sanctions relief.
Reports from Geneva say Iran presented a new proposal to the American side during this round. Iranian officials described the proposal as a test of the United States’ seriousness about diplomacy. Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi delivered the proposal to the U.S. side. The plan aims to address US concerns about the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program. Officials have not released details of the proposal. However, Iranian sources said that if Washington rejects it, Tehran will see this as proof of a lack of real commitment to a diplomatic solution.
On Thursday morning, Steve Witkoff, special representative of U.S. President Donald Trump, arrived in Geneva to join the talks. Before the new exchanges began, Araghchi met Albusaidi on Wednesday evening. During the meeting, Araghchi explained Iran’s positions on the nuclear issue and sanctions relief. He said progress depends on serious engagement by the other side. He also warned against actions that could damage trust. Araghchi thanked Oman for its mediation role. The Omani foreign minister said his country remains ready to support dialogue and hopes both sides show political will.
The first two rounds of indirect talks took place in Muscat and Geneva. They marked a careful return to diplomacy. Iran entered the talks with clear conditions. These included recognition of its right to uranium enrichment and limiting discussions to nuclear matters. The second round moved beyond general talks to more detailed discussions. Araghchi said both sides agreed on general guiding principles. This opened the way for drafting a possible agreement. A final deal is not expected soon. Still, the current round will show whether both sides can turn talks into lasting commitments.
