Iranian leaders have firmly rejected attempts to reinstate UN sanctions, declaring that the country will not yield to external pressure. The UN Security Council recently failed to pass a resolution that would have permanently lifted previous nuclear-related sanctions. Nine members opposed the measure, while Russia, China, Pakistan, and Algeria supported it, and two abstained. If no breakthrough occurs, UN sanctions are set to return automatically. European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal rejected Tehran’s offer to prevent sanctions while addressing their concerns.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned that the reinstatement of UN sanctions could undermine the Cairo agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency. He called Europe’s snapback attempt illegal and said Iran, China, and Russia had presented strong legal arguments. He added that diplomatic channels remain open despite renewed pressure.
Iranian lawmakers also responded to the vote. Ebrahim Azizi said years of “maximum pressure” failed and only raised costs for adversaries. Ali Nikzad called the snapback a desperate effort to force Iran into submission. Meanwhile, Ebrahim Rezayi suggested that Tehran could reconsider its commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if sanctions return.
