Iran officially launched its first geothermal power plant on Thursday, marking a major step in its renewable energy strategy. The 5-megawatt facility near Meshginshahr now supplies electricity to the national grid. Moreover, the project introduces geothermal power generation to Iran for the first time. It also supports efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix.
Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi attended the inauguration ceremony. Officials connected the €10 million plant to the national electricity network. They described the project as the result of years of geological research, exploration, and drilling around the dormant Sabalan volcano.
The power station lies about 25 kilometers south of Meshginshahr in the Darreh-ye Moeil area. Geological surveys indicate the underground reservoir could eventually support up to 250 megawatts of electricity generation. Engineers drilled wells nearly 3,000 meters deep to reach the geothermal resource. However, they faced difficult volcanic conditions and temperatures above 240 degrees Celsius.
Aliabadi said the project strengthens Iran’s renewable energy sector. He added that it also expands domestic engineering expertise. Furthermore, he said the experience gained during construction will support future geothermal projects. As a result, Iran could reduce its reliance on foreign technology.
Researchers have identified at least 18 regions across Iran with geothermal potential. Among them, the Sabalan field remains one of the country’s most promising high-temperature resources. In addition, experts continue studying several other regions for future development.
MAPNA Group has also started adapting turbines and specialized equipment for geothermal operations. Engineers are designing corrosion-resistant materials for the project. Geothermal fluids contain high levels of minerals and salt. Therefore, the equipment requires stronger protection. Consequently, domestic manufacturing capabilities could expand alongside future renewable energy projects.
Unlike solar and wind energy, geothermal power provides continuous electricity throughout the year. It operates regardless of weather conditions. Furthermore, officials plan to use excess geothermal heat for district heating, greenhouse farming, aquaculture, and industrial applications. Although the current facility generates only 5 megawatts, Iran plans gradual expansion. Officials also aim to build a broader geothermal industry through domestic expertise and long-term investment.
