Iran’s success in para sports returned to the spotlight after veteran player Morteza Mehrzad called for greater recognition following the team’s latest world championship victory. The experienced athlete praised the squad’s consistency and urged sports authorities to provide stronger long-term support.
Iran recently won its ninth Sitting Volleyball World Championship, extending its remarkable record in international para sports. Moreover, the victory secured direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games, adding another major milestone before the team’s next challenge.
Speaking after the tournament, Mehrzad said the team entered the competition with limited preparation. National circumstances prevented international warm-up matches after the Paris Paralympic Games. Nevertheless, the experienced squad relied on teamwork, discipline, and experience to defend the world title.
Furthermore, Mehrzad said Paralympic qualification was the team’s first objective before the tournament. Winning the championship while securing qualification made the achievement even more meaningful for the players and coaching staff.
Iran also defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina, its long-time rival, twice during the tournament. The teams met again in the championship final. Although both matches proved difficult, Iran prevailed through experience and tactical discipline.
In addition, Mehrzad highlighted the team’s outstanding record over many years. He said no other Iranian team sport has achieved similar long-term international success. However, he expressed disappointment that major victories receive only limited public attention.
According to Mehrzad, the players and coaches continue winning international titles despite receiving less recognition than several higher-profile sports. He believes consistent champions deserve greater appreciation, stronger investment, and wider public support.
The national program has become one of Iran’s most successful international teams. Over the years, it has won multiple world championship and Paralympic titles while remaining among the world’s top sitting volleyball teams.
Officials and coaches have now shifted their attention to the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya. The tournament represents the team’s next major target as it aims to win another international gold medal.
Meanwhile, preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games will continue through regional competitions and training camps. Coaches also plan to strengthen the squad with additional international matches whenever possible.
Mehrzad also hopes other national teams will learn from Iran’s successful sitting volleyball program. He believes discipline, continuity, and teamwork have driven the team’s long-term success and can inspire achievements in other sports.
