Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in the Iraqi city of Najaf on Monday for Arbaeen religious ceremonies. The visit coincided with Tehran’s rejection of claims that new negotiations with the United States had begun. U.S. President Donald Trump recently said fresh discussions with Iran would start on Monday. However, Iranian officials insisted that no negotiations are currently taking place.

Iranian officials said Araghchi traveled to Najaf to participate in Arbaeen events. Arbaeen ranks among the world’s largest annual religious gatherings. Every year, millions of pilgrims travel to Najaf and Karbala. They commemorate the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Araghchi also shared photographs from his visit on his official Telegram channel. The images confirmed his presence in Najaf during preparations for the pilgrimage. Although the visit centered on religious observances, it also attracted political attention because of recent diplomatic developments.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei spoke during his regular Monday press briefing. He answered questions about President Trump’s comments on possible negotiations. Baghaei rejected those claims and said Iran is not holding talks with the United States.

Baghaei explained that Tehran remains focused on discussions with Oman. He said those talks concern maritime security and regional stability. He also pointed to Araghchi’s visit to Najaf as evidence that the foreign minister’s current priority is the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

Oman has long served as a regional mediator during periods of heightened tension. Muscat has often facilitated indirect communication between Iran and Western governments. Nevertheless, Iranian officials stressed that current contacts with Oman do not represent negotiations with Washington.

The latest statements highlight the difference between Washington’s public comments and Tehran’s official position. While Trump predicted new discussions, Iranian authorities continue to deny that any direct or indirect talks are underway.

Arbaeen continues to attract millions of pilgrims from Iraq, Iran, and other countries every year. Iraqi authorities have expanded security, transportation, and healthcare services to support the large gathering. Meanwhile, regional observers will continue watching for any future diplomatic developments involving Iran and the United States.
