A private philanthropist has pledged 60 billion rials to support the Sheikh Bahai Bathhouse restoration in Isfahan, marking a significant milestone for cultural heritage conservation in Iran. The contribution represents the first direct private charitable investment in restoring a historic monument within the province.
Provincial cultural heritage officials welcomed the initiative and described it as an important step toward protecting one of Isfahan’s most valuable historical landmarks. Moreover, they said the project could encourage additional private support for preservation efforts across the province.
Officials explained that the Safavid-era bathhouse stands near Isfahan’s historic Jameh Mosque and the city’s traditional bazaar. Consequently, the monument occupies one of the oldest and most culturally significant districts in the historic city.
The bathhouse dates to the reign of Shah Abbas I and is widely associated with the celebrated Persian scholar, architect, and engineer Sheikh Bahai. Furthermore, authorities added the monument to Iran’s National Heritage List in 1998 because of its historical and architectural importance.
Provincial heritage officials revealed they now control approximately 99 percent of the property’s ownership. They achieved that milestone after completing a complex acquisition process involving nearly 90 different property owners over fifteen years.
During the past three years, restoration teams invested around 20 billion rials in emergency conservation and structural stabilization. However, limited financial resources delayed the remaining restoration work and postponed plans for reopening the monument to visitors.
The new financial commitment will allow conservation specialists to continue restoring the bathhouse’s main hot chamber and surrounding interior sections. Additionally, heritage authorities will supervise every stage of the restoration process under a formal cooperation agreement with the donor.
Officials identified the benefactor as a well-known philanthropist originally from Isfahan who currently lives abroad. They also noted the donor has previously financed educational projects in underserved communities throughout Iran.
According to provincial officials, the philanthropist has expressed interest in supporting additional restoration projects if the current initiative achieves successful results. Therefore, authorities believe the project could establish a new model for preserving historic monuments through private charitable partnerships.
Experts have long argued that public funding alone cannot protect Iran’s extensive collection of historical sites. Consequently, greater participation from private donors may help preserve cultural landmarks while reducing financial pressure on government institutions.
The Sheikh Bahai Bathhouse also attracts considerable attention because of stories surrounding its unusual heating system. Historical accounts claim the structure remained warm through an innovative engineering design that inspired generations of scholars and visitors.
Officials plan to highlight those engineering achievements while transforming the restored monument into a cultural and tourism destination. As a result, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of both the site’s historical importance and its technological legacy.
Looking ahead, the restoration project could strengthen heritage tourism in Isfahan while encouraging broader community participation in preserving historic landmarks. Furthermore, successful completion may inspire similar conservation partnerships throughout the country.
