Iran’s Foreign Ministry officially declared two French embassy employees persona non grata during recent diplomatic proceedings. Consequently, the government banned both diplomatic officials from re-entering Iranian territory over alleged misconduct. Official representatives cited direct violations of international law and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
In an official public statement, Iranian diplomatic authorities highlighted the severity of the alleged infractions. Furthermore, officials stressed that several weeks had passed following the initial disclosure of the alleged activities. However, French authorities failed to address the conduct or provide guarantees regarding future compliance.
Because French authorities reportedly took no corrective action, Iranian officials formally prohibited the two diplomats from returning. Meanwhile, the diplomatic decision followed earlier formal warnings issued by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry. On August 15, Iranian intelligence authorities cautioned France against interfering in the country’s domestic affairs.
Iranian security forces had previously intercepted both individuals during a covert gathering linked to allegations of foreign infiltration. Investigators said recovered documents pointed to a broader coordinated effort to establish local networks. Thus, intelligence officials argued that the French personnel had overstepped established legal boundaries and diplomatic responsibilities.
In response to these allegations, French officials reportedly attempted to divert public attention from the central investigation. Nevertheless, Iranian security authorities warned that future violations would face immediate and firm countermeasures. Therefore, the expulsion represents a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
Diplomatic analysts suggest that the move could further complicate political communication between Iran and European governments. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced countermeasures shortly after learning about Tehran’s decision. Specifically, Paris plans to expel two Iranian diplomats in retaliation during the coming days.
These reciprocal measures indicate deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two governments.
