Seismological networks at the University of Tehran recorded 90 earthquakes across the country between August 8 and August 14. The weekly monitoring report highlights continuous tectonic activity beneath the seismically active Iranian Plateau. Specialist teams continuously track ground movements to evaluate regional fault activity and improve community disaster preparedness. Furthermore, the latest data provides valuable insights into the distribution of seismic activity across different provinces.
Low-magnitude tremors accounted for the vast majority of seismic events recorded during the seven-day period. Specifically, 76 recorded earthquakes registered below magnitude 3.0. Additionally, 10 earthquakes measured between magnitudes 3.0 and 4.0 across several monitored regions. Meanwhile, four stronger seismic events registered between magnitudes 4.0 and 5.0.
The strongest event measured magnitude 4.7 on August 10 in Khuzestan Province. Geographically, Khorasan Razavi recorded the highest number of earthquakes, with 16 distinct events. Semnan Province followed with 12 recorded events, while Khuzestan recorded 11 tremors. Conversely, 13 provinces, including Tehran, Alborz, and Gilan, recorded no seismic activity.
Long-term monitoring data demonstrates that frequent ground shaking remains a persistent environmental reality across the country. During the previous calendar year, researchers documented 2,380 earthquakes exceeding magnitude 2.5 nationwide. Among these events, 910 earthquakes exceeded magnitude 3.0, while 130 registered above magnitude 4.0. Furthermore, 15 significant earthquakes surpassed magnitude 5.0 during that 12-month monitoring period.
Geological experts emphasize that complex fault systems and tectonic activity make the region exceptionally vulnerable to earthquakes. Consequently, the country accounts for approximately two percent of global earthquakes but six percent of historical earthquake victims. Urban planners continue to use detailed seismic monitoring data to strengthen building codes and emergency protocols. Looking ahead, scientists will maintain rigorous monitoring efforts to enhance national disaster preparedness and public safety.
