The IMS Cinema in São Paulo, Brazil, is presenting a major retrospective celebrating Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. The program allows international audiences to explore five decades of his visionary cinematic work through restored 2K digital prints.

The comprehensive retrospective runs through September 27 and spans Kiarostami’s prolific artistic career. Organizers have selected early educational short films alongside his internationally acclaimed feature productions.

Audiences will experience seminal early works such as The Bread and the Alley, as well as his renowned Koker trilogy, including Where Is My Friend’s House?

The program also features Close-Up and Taste of Cherry, which won the Palme d’Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. The retrospective concludes with 24 Frames, Kiarostami’s groundbreaking experimental film released posthumously following his death.

During his career, Kiarostami created more than 40 films, including short films, documentaries, and feature-length productions. International projects such as Certified Copy and Like Someone in Love further expanded his global artistic influence.

Widely regarded as one of the most important figures in world cinema, Kiarostami was a leading figure of the Iranian New Wave. His distinctive style often combined allegorical storytelling, child protagonists, long static shots, and subtle blends of fiction and reality.

The São Paulo retrospective highlights Kiarostami’s enduring influence on contemporary cinema while introducing his unique artistic legacy to new generations of audiences in South America.
