The Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran recorded 407 earthquakes nationwide between July 23 and August 22. Consequently, seismic monitoring networks continued tracking regional tectonic activity to assess ongoing natural hazard risks.

Statistically, 348 registered tremors measured below magnitude 3 during the monitoring period. Furthermore, specialized monitoring stations detected 45 earthquakes ranging from magnitude 3 to 4 across multiple regions.

Fourteen significant seismic events exceeded magnitude 4, highlighting persistent tectonic activity across the country. Specifically, the strongest earthquake struck Khuzestan Province on August 10, registering a magnitude of 4.7.

Geographically, Semnan Province recorded the highest number of seismic events, with 74 earthquakes. Meanwhile, regional seismic networks logged 45 tremors in Khorasan Razavi and 32 in North Khorasan.

The capital region of Tehran recorded 10 minor earthquakes, with the strongest reaching magnitude 2.5. Previously, monitoring centers recorded 2,380 earthquakes exceeding magnitude 2.5 during the previous annual reporting period.

Historical data shows that 910 annual earthquakes exceeded magnitude 3, while 15 events surpassed magnitude 5. Geologically, the Iranian Plateau lies within one of the world’s most seismically active regions.

Although Iran accounts for roughly two percent of global earthquakes, it experiences disproportionately high mortality rates. Therefore, historical statistics show that natural disasters in the region account for more than six percent of worldwide earthquake fatalities.

Emergency management authorities plan to strengthen building standards and improve urban disaster preparedness. Ultimately, continuous seismic monitoring remains essential for reducing future infrastructure losses and protecting vulnerable communities.
