Iranian Cinema Icon Akbar Abdi Dies at 66 in Tehran

Veteran Iranian actor and comedian Akbar Abdi died at the age of 66 in Tehran after years of health problems. His passing ends a career that lasted more than four decades. During that time, he helped shape Iranian cinema, television, and theater.

Abdi suffered a heart attack nearly two months ago. Doctors treated him in a Tehran hospital for about 20 days. Although his condition initially improved, his health later deteriorated. He died at his home on July 24.

The Iran Cinema Organization announced that his funeral will take place on Sunday outside Tehran’s Vahdat Hall. Family members, fellow actors, and admirers are expected to attend the ceremony. He will later be buried in the Artists’ Section of Behesht-e Zahra Cemetery.

President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed condolences to Abdi’s family, the artistic community, and the Iranian people. He praised the actor’s exceptional talent and lasting contributions. Furthermore, he said Abdi’s performances became part of the country’s cultural memory.

Culture Minister Seyyed Abbas Salehi also paid tribute to the late actor. He described Abdi as a gifted performer whose work inspired several generations. Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi also honored him. He said Abdi earned a permanent place in the history of Iranian cinema.

Born in Tehran on August 26, 1960, Abdi began acting in children’s television during the early 1980s. His natural comedic talent quickly attracted audiences across the country. He later became one of Iran’s most recognized entertainers.

During a career spanning more than 40 years, Abdi appeared in over 150 films and television productions. He successfully balanced comedy and drama throughout his career. As a result, audiences admired his memorable characters and remarkable versatility.

His role in Mother earned him his first Crystal Simorgh for Best Supporting Actor. Later, his performance in I Feel Sleepy brought him a second Crystal Simorgh.

Abdi leaves behind an extraordinary artistic legacy. His films and performances will continue inspiring audiences. Moreover, they will remain an enduring part of Iranian cultural history.
