Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas discussed regional security and international developments during a telephone conversation on Saturday. Their talks focused on the reported attack on an Iranian commercial ship in the Caspian Sea and rising tensions in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

During the call, Araghchi strongly condemned what he described as a Ukrainian military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel. He said the incident violated international law and called for a firm response from the United Nations Security Council, the European Union, and the wider international community.

Araghchi also demanded accountability for those responsible for planning, supporting, or carrying out the reported attack. He urged international organizations to investigate the incident and stressed the importance of protecting civilian maritime navigation under international law.

The conversation also addressed recent developments in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Both sides reviewed the situation following Iran’s military response to what Tehran described as U.S. aggression. They emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further regional escalation.

Araghchi said dialogue remains the most effective way to reduce tensions. He encouraged continued communication between regional and international partners while highlighting the importance of respecting international agreements.

Although neither side announced specific agreements, Araghchi and Kallas agreed that diplomacy remains essential for managing current regional challenges. Their discussion reflected ongoing engagement between Tehran and the European Union during a period of heightened uncertainty.

The reported attack comes as maritime security remains a major international concern. Shipping routes across the region support global trade and energy exports, making stability a priority for governments and businesses alike. The Strait of Hormuz continues to serve as one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments.

Looking ahead, diplomatic contacts between Iran, the European Union, and other international partners are expected to continue. Analysts will closely monitor future discussions for developments that could influence regional security and international maritime stability.
