Iran’s foreign minister praised German President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier for his strong stance on international law, as tensions escalate in the region. Abbas Araghchi shared his appreciation on X, noting that Steinmeier condemned aggression and violations of legal norms. Consequently, his remarks gained global attention.

Steinmeier spoke at a ceremony in Berlin. However, he rejected claims of imminent threats that justified the attacks. He said the justification was unconvincing. “In my view, this war violates international law,” Steinmeier stated. Moreover, his words challenged the official narrative of US and allied actions. Araghchi highlighted what he described as Western double standards on crises in Gaza, Ukraine, and Iran. Therefore, he said international law often seems ignored.

The conflict escalated on February 28. Meanwhile, US and Israeli forces launched attacks in Iran, reportedly killing several senior commanders, including former Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran responded swiftly with missile and drone strikes. Additionally, targets included US military bases in the region and Israeli-controlled areas. Global reactions varied. Some leaders condemned the violence and urged restraint. Others, however, emphasized diplomacy to prevent further escalation.

Analysts warn continued attacks could destabilize regional security and disrupt global energy supplies. Thus, legal experts stress adherence to international norms to prevent wider conflict. United Nations officials have called for restraint and legal accountability. Furthermore, observers expect the Security Council to address these legal concerns in upcoming sessions.

European leaders largely supported Steinmeier’s criticism. In contrast, some encouraged renewed talks between Iran, the US, and regional partners to reduce tensions. The ongoing conflict raises economic, legal, and humanitarian challenges. Consequently, international law remains central in debates about state conduct and accountability.

Looking forward, diplomats aim to promote dialogue and avoid further civilian harm. Moreover, legal institutions may scrutinize potential breaches of international law closely. Steinmeier’s comments mark a rare Western voice against the escalation. Therefore, observers note the significance for international diplomacy and conflict resolution.
