Iran Appoints Ghalibaf to Lead Strategic China Relations After Larijani’s Death

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently appointed Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf to manage the strategic relationship between Iran and China. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei explicitly endorsed this high-level appointment because the position requires massive institutional authority. Ghalibaf will now synchronize all government branches, security sectors, and economic ministries regarding Chinese foreign policy. Furthermore, officials confirmed that Ghalibaf holds significantly broader executive powers than any previous envoy to Beijing.

This dramatic administrative transition follows the sudden death of former nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani in March. American and Israeli military strikes recently targeted several high-profile strategic locations across the Iranian capital. Larijani previously served as the supreme leader’s personal representative for the monumental twenty-five-year bilateral accord. Consequently, the government needed an influential figure to prevent any momentum loss within this critical economic alliance.

Before this new decree, the Islamic Republic divided its Chinese diplomatic portfolio among multiple competing factions. For instance, former Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli previously operated as the presidential special representative. Concurrently, the presidential administration designated Rahmani Fazli as the plenipotentiary envoy directly inside Beijing last year. Now, Ghalibaf consolidates all these previously fragmented diplomatic responsibilities under one centralized parliamentary command structure.

The timing of this administrative restructuring highlights the growing economic dependence Iran maintains with Asian markets. China currently functions as the largest buyer of Iranian crude oil despite heavy Western financial restrictions. Additionally, both nations actively execute a massive four-hundred-billion-dollar economic and security cooperation agreement signed recently. Therefore, Ghalibaf must accelerate these stalled infrastructure investments to stabilize the struggling domestic economy.

Political analysts view Ghalibaf as a pragmatic conservative who possesses extensive experience in national security matters. He previously managed sensitive diplomatic tracks, including leading the Iranian delegation during recent security talks in Pakistan. His background as a military commander helps him bridge the gap between elected politicians and powerful security institutions. Accordingly, Beijing likely welcomes a decisive coordinator who can guarantee the safety of their regional investments.

Moving forward, Ghalibaf face the immediate challenge of reviving several delayed energy and railway projects. He must reassure Chinese state corporations that Iranian infrastructure remains secure despite recent regional military escalations. Moreover, parliament will likely introduce new legislation to streamline foreign trade procedures for Chinese businesses. This strategic appointment ultimate signals that Iran will continue its pivot toward eastern superpowers for long-term survival.
