Iran strongly rejected Canada’s new human rights draft resolution at the United Nations and linked its concerns to political motives. The Iranian Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Gholam Hossein Darzi, delivered a firm response during a meeting of the UN Third Committee. His remarks came after Canada presented another annual text targeting Iran.
Darzi criticized the draft and argued that Canada used political motives rather than constructive engagement. He said the resolution lacked fairness and aimed to pressure Iran. Moreover, he stated that the proposal served Ottawa’s agenda and ignored sincere dialogue.
The diplomat stressed that Iran rejects the content and purpose of the Canadian draft. He argued that Canada never opened a negotiation process. Instead, Canada introduced the resolution without consultation. This approach, he said, contradicted UN principles that encourage cooperation.
Furthermore, Darzi claimed that the draft undermines efforts to build trust. He noted that such texts encourage confrontation rather than progress. He repeated that only joint work can lead to durable human rights improvements. According to him, the Canadian plan fails to support this path.
He also insisted that Canada imposes the same draft every year. He argued that this habit reveals deeper political motives. Darzi maintained that this pattern blocks any hope for balanced engagement. He also underlined that Iran wants discussions based on equality and respect.
Additionally, the Iranian envoy said the draft ignores serious violations by other states. He referred to what Tehran describes as unlawful actions by the United States and Israel during recent military operations. He argued that Canada refuses to address those events. This refusal, he said, proves a double standard.
Darzi warned that selective policies weaken the global human rights system. He explained that impartiality forms a core UN value. However, he said Canada dismisses this value when it targets Iran alone. He urged member states to question this approach and demand fairness.
In conclusion, Iran called for dialogue rooted in cooperation. Darzi said Iran remains open to discussions that respect sovereignty. Yet he added that Iran rejects any resolution shaped by political motives. He encouraged the UN to pursue balanced methods that support genuine progress.
