Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly criticized the World Economic Forum after the organization revoked his invitation to its Davos summit. He described the Davos disinvitation as the result of political bias and false claims by Israel and U.S.-based actors. Araghchi said the disinvitation reflects a selective moral stance, undermining the credibility of the forum. He emphasized that Iran has acted defensively during recent unrest, protecting citizens from armed groups and ISIS-style attacks reportedly supported by Mossad. Araghchi insisted the violence had a clear cause, contradicting narratives presented to the WEF.
He also highlighted what he called the “sad irony” of the WEF’s decision. Araghchi pointed out that Israeli leaders accused of civilian casualties in Gaza continue to attend international events without restriction. He specifically referenced Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s appearance at Davos in 2024 despite international complaints regarding Gaza. Araghchi accused the WEF of applying a double standard. He argued that this selective treatment demonstrates moral weakness and intellectual failure in global institutions. The minister called for transparency and truth, stressing that the public deserves unfiltered information.
Iran’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Mahoud Narimani, echoed these criticisms. He described the disinvitation as unjustified and inconsistent with diplomatic norms. Narimani said the move prevents Iran’s perspective from reaching international audiences and undermines both the WEF’s credibility and Switzerland’s historic neutrality. Founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, the WEF hosts invitation-only annual gatherings in Davos. These events bring together billionaires, CEOs, politicians, and media figures. Critics argue the forum prioritizes elite interests over national sovereignty and democratic accountability.
Programs such as stakeholder capitalism and the Young Global Leaders initiative have placed alumni in influential government positions worldwide. Skeptics contend these programs strengthen corporate influence over national policymaking. As a result, the forum is often seen as a platform for transnational elite coordination rather than a neutral discussion space. Observers said the Davos disinvitation highlights the forum’s imbalance.
It shows how selective moral standards favor some nations while punishing others. Many see this as a failure to allow equal representation for sovereign states. In response, Iran labeled the disinvitation politically motivated and unjust. Officials warned that the WEF’s credibility suffers when participation is dictated by selective pressure.
