Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani spoke with Iraq’s National Security Adviser Qassim Al Araji. They discussed regional developments and the importance of Iran security along their shared border. Both sides stressed tighter coordination to ensure stability and block terrorist groups from moving between the two countries. The discussions come as Iran continues to manage widespread demonstrations over economic concerns. The government has highlighted Iran security as essential to protecting citizens and maintaining national stability. Authorities are also closely monitoring armed Kurdish opposition groups operating from Iraq’s Kurdistan region, which Tehran sees as potential destabilizing forces.

In March 2023, Iran and Iraq signed a security pact. The agreement pledged to enhance joint efforts against terrorism, prevent cross-border attacks, and strengthen cooperation in security matters. This pact has become a critical component of Iraq’s regional strategy while maintaining respect for Iran’s sovereignty. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to this agreement during the call. Analysts note that Iran security remains a top priority for Tehran, especially as it faces multiple challenges from unrest, economic pressures, and regional threats. The Iranian leadership has emphasized a firm stance against any activity that could destabilize the country. Officials have also indicated that continued collaboration with Iraq is key to maintaining border integrity and regional stability.

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) maintain headquarters in Iraq’s northern regions. Iran and Turkey both accuse these groups of threatening security through cross-border operations. The Iranian government stresses that controlling these movements directly contributes to maintaining Iran security and protecting its citizens. Looking forward, Iran and Iraq plan to expand joint monitoring efforts, increase intelligence sharing, and coordinate rapid responses to potential threats.

Authorities expect that strengthened border cooperation will help reduce risks and support a safer environment for all citizens in border regions. Iran security remains a central theme for the government. Both countries continue to emphasize collaboration, vigilance, and proactive measures to safeguard national interests. The call between Larijani and Al Araji underscores Tehran’s commitment to border safety and regional stability.
