Iran and Iraq signed four cooperation agreements in Tehran on Thursday, expanding bilateral collaboration across transportation, infrastructure, education, and public administration. The agreements highlighted both governments’ commitment to strengthening economic integration and improving long-term regional connectivity. Furthermore, officials described the new partnerships as another step toward deeper strategic cooperation between the neighboring countries.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Kadhim al-Zaidi oversaw the signing ceremony during the Iraqi leader’s official visit to Tehran. Senior ministers and government representatives from both countries attended the event. Additionally, officials held high-level meetings to discuss future economic, political, and regional cooperation.
The signed documents included a road freight transport agreement designed to improve cross-border commercial movement. Officials also approved a memorandum of understanding supporting the proposed Khosravi-Khanaqin-Baghdad railway project. Moreover, both governments agreed to establish sister-city relations between Tehran and Baghdad while expanding cooperation in public management, education, and human resource development.
The railway project remains one of the most important transportation initiatives connecting Iran and Iraq. Once completed, the route could improve regional trade, reduce transportation costs, and strengthen logistics between both countries. Consequently, businesses may benefit from faster cargo movement and greater access to neighboring markets.
Road transportation also plays an essential role in bilateral trade because Iran and Iraq share a border extending approximately 1,600 kilometers. Every year, millions of travelers and pilgrims cross official border points, while thousands of commercial shipments move between both countries. Therefore, improved transport agreements could increase trade efficiency and reduce logistical challenges.
Officials also emphasized the importance of cooperation in education and public administration. They believe exchanging expertise and developing professional training programs will strengthen institutional capacity across government organizations. Meanwhile, the sister-city agreement between Tehran and Baghdad aims to encourage cultural exchanges and municipal cooperation.
