The Iran national football team finished their final World Cup group stage match with a dramatic one-all draw against Egypt. This crucial result placed Iran third in their group because Belgium simultaneously defeated New Zealand. Consequently, the squad must now wait for other match results to determine their qualification for the knockout stage. Eight top third-place teams will advance, so Iran still maintains a historic opportunity to reach the next round. The players will face Switzerland in Vancouver on July first if they secure a spot in the brackets.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei made two critical tactical adjustments to his starting lineup before the opening whistle. Milad Mohammedi replaced Ehsan Hajsafi in defense while Mohammad Gorbani earned his first World Cup appearance today. However, Egypt initiated the match aggressively and shocked the Iranian defense within the opening five minutes of play. Mahmoud Saber scored the fastest goal in Egyptian World Cup history to give his team an early lead. Iran quickly responded with a penalty opportunity, but captain Mehdi Taremi missed the crucial spot-kick minutes later.

The Iranian players refused to lose momentum and intensified their attacking pressure against the Egyptian defensive line. Defender Ramin Rezaeian successfully equalized the score in the fourteenth minute with a powerful and precise strike. This goal established Rezaeian as the highest-scoring player for the Iran national football team in tournament history. Both teams subsequently adjusted their defensive strategies, which caused the first half to end in a draw.

The match remained balanced until Shujae Khalilzadeh scored an apparent winning goal in the ninety-sixth minute of injury time. Iranian fans celebrated wildly, but the referee quickly overturned the goal after consulting the video assistant referee. Replays indicated that the video assistant referee disallowed the goal because Khalilzadeh was marginally offside by centimeters.
