Iran air defense has appointed General Alireza Elhami as the new commander of the Army Air Defense Force. This change replaces Brigadier General Alireza Sabahi Fard, whose leadership faced criticism over recent performance. Officials have not explained the reason for this high-level replacement. Elhami has served as deputy commander of the Army Air Defense Force since 2019. Previously, he led the Air Defense University from 2013 to 2015. He also served as operations deputy at the Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base from 2015 to 2018. In 2018, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei promoted him to full brigadier general while he acted as deputy for operations.

Elhami’s long tenure in key operational roles prepared him to lead the Army Air Defense Force nationally.
From 2018 to 2019, he was deputy commander at the Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base. His experience makes him well-known in military circles. Analysts say he is likely to oversee strategic reforms in the force. Sabahi Fard led the Joint Air Defense Base since last February. He also remained commander of the Army Air Defense Force. His appointment was approved by Khamenei and organized by General Staff chief Mohammad Bagheri. Bagheri was killed in Israeli strikes during a 12-day conflict earlier this year.

Observers say Iran air defense under Sabahi Fard failed to protect territory effectively. The recent war against Israeli and American attacks revealed operational gaps. These shortcomings may have influenced the leadership change. The appointment comes amid heightened regional tensions. Experts believe Elhami’s operational background could allow faster strategic adjustments. He brings both academic leadership and frontline operational experience, which may shape future planning.

Iran air defense officials have not announced further plans. Analysts expect structural and tactical evaluations under the new commander. The force may focus on modernizing systems, improving readiness, and addressing past weaknesses. The leadership change reflects Tehran’s effort to reinforce military capabilities. Analysts will monitor Elhami’s tenure and potential policy shifts in Iran air defense strategy.
