Iran Rad-1 radar satellite is approaching its official unveiling after a short technical delay, according to senior officials overseeing the country’s space program. The announcement highlights Iran’s continued investment in domestic satellite technology while reflecting broader ambitions to strengthen national space capabilities.
Hassan Salarieh, chairman of the Iranian Space Agency and deputy minister of information and communications technology, discussed the project during remarks on Wednesday. He described the upcoming satellite as one of the country’s most important space initiatives developed through domestic expertise and engineering.
According to Salarieh, authorities originally planned to unveil the satellite earlier in 2026. However, engineers adjusted the schedule after identifying technical issues that commonly arise during complex aerospace development projects. He emphasized that additional testing would help ensure the satellite meets expected operational standards before its official introduction.
The Iran Rad-1 radar satellite represents the country’s first domestically designed radar imaging satellite. Unlike conventional optical satellites, radar systems can collect imagery during darkness and through cloud cover. Consequently, governments often use such technology for environmental monitoring, disaster management, agriculture, infrastructure planning, and security applications.
Salarieh also confirmed that engineers have already started developing Rad-2, the next generation of the program. Furthermore, he explained that the future satellite will deliver higher imaging accuracy and improved technical performance compared with its predecessor.
