Iran has launched test flights of the Simorgh cargo plane, marking a major milestone for its aviation industry. Moreover, authorities said the aircraft will enhance domestic air transport capacity and strengthen logistical operations nationwide. The first test flights occurred on Tuesday at an airfield in Shahin Shahr, central Iran. The event was attended by deputy officials from the defense and transportation ministries. They highlighted the strategic and operational importance of the new aircraft.
According to the Civil Aviation Organization (CAA), the plane must complete 100 hours of testing in varying conditions. Only after this process will it officially join Iran’s aviation fleet. Experts add that the plane could serve both civilian and military missions. Hossein Pourfarzaneh, head of the CAA, emphasized that the Simorgh cargo plane represents more than 15 years of domestic research and development. He noted that, consequently, Iran now joins fewer than 20 countries capable of independently designing and building aircraft.
The plane features two 2,500-horsepower engines. It can carry six metric tons of cargo over 3,900 kilometers. Its maximum takeoff weight reaches 21.5 metric tons. Furthermore, experts describe the aircraft as agile, fast, and well-suited to Iran’s climate. They also say it could be ideal for urgent medical or rescue missions. The aircraft underwent a fast-taxi test in May 2022, and subsequently completed its maiden flight one year later. Meanwhile, the defense ministry coordinated with the CAA to obtain a type certificate confirming the aircraft’s airworthiness.
Some analysts consider the Simorgh cargo plane an upgraded version of the IrAn-140, a joint Iranian-Ukrainian project. However, others argue it features a modified engine and fuselage, making it a distinct design. Officials highlighted the aircraft’s value for military logistics. It can transport troops and equipment between bases efficiently. In addition, they suggested it could integrate into Iran’s short-haul passenger fleet in the future.
The development of the Simorgh cargo plane comes amid international sanctions that limit Iran’s ability to purchase new planes or aircraft parts.
