Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian received the credentials of Sri Lanka’s new ambassador to Tehran, Fazeeha Azmi, on Wednesday. The meeting highlighted both countries’ commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation. Furthermore, officials emphasized expanding collaboration across several strategic sectors.
During the meeting, President Pezeshkian described Iran Sri Lanka relations as longstanding and built on mutual respect and shared interests. He reaffirmed Tehran’s readiness to deepen cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, technology, and other important economic sectors. Therefore, he encouraged both governments to pursue practical initiatives supporting long-term growth.
The president also stressed the importance of activating the Joint Economic Commission to accelerate bilateral projects. He said the commission could identify new investment opportunities and improve implementation of existing agreements. Moreover, stronger institutional cooperation would help both countries benefit from their available economic potential.
Pezeshkian thanked the Sri Lankan government for its humanitarian assistance following the repatriation of the remains of Iranian personnel after a recent military incident. According to the president, the gesture reflected the friendly relationship between Tehran and Colombo. Consequently, he expressed hope that similar cooperation would continue in future humanitarian matters.
Ambassador Fazeeha Azmi delivered greetings from Sri Lanka’s leadership while reaffirming her country’s commitment to expanding bilateral ties. She noted that Iran and Sri Lanka will mark the sixty-sixth anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Additionally, she described the milestone as evidence of a durable partnership between both nations.
The ambassador also thanked Iran for its continued support in international organizations on issues concerning Sri Lanka’s national sovereignty. She pledged to strengthen diplomatic engagement while promoting broader cooperation across regional and international forums. Meanwhile, both sides emphasized maintaining regular political dialogue.
Economic analysts believe stronger Iran Sri Lanka relations could create additional opportunities in trade, agriculture, energy, and technology. Improved institutional cooperation may also encourage greater investment and commercial exchanges between the two countries. Looking ahead, officials expect the Joint Economic Commission to play a central role in advancing new agreements and expanding bilateral cooperation.
