Iran’s women’s kata team won a historic silver medal at the 2026 Asian Games after reaching the final in Toyohashi, Japan. The result marked the country’s first Asian Games medal in women’s kata.
The Iranian trio featured Fatemeh Sadeghi, Sepideh Amini and Zeinab Hosseini. They faced Vietnam in the women’s team kata final at Toyohashi Gymnasium.
Vietnam controlled the final and secured a 5–0 victory over Iran. Consequently, the Iranian team finished second and collected the silver medal.
However, the result represented a major milestone for Iranian women’s karate. Iran had never previously won an Asian Games medal in the women’s kata event.
Earlier in the competition, the Iranian team produced two important victories. First, Sadeghi, Amini and Hosseini defeated Thailand during the knockout stage.
The team then overcame the Philippines to secure its place in the final. Those performances gave Iran a historic opportunity to claim its first medal in the discipline.
Although Vietnam ultimately prevented Iran from taking gold, the silver medal still carried significant importance. The achievement also highlighted the growing presence of Iranian women in international karate.
Fatemeh Baghlanipour coaches the Iranian team and guided the athletes throughout their Asian Games campaign. Under her direction, the trio progressed through a demanding competition and reached the medal stage.
Meanwhile, the 2026 Asian Games have brought athletes from across Asia together in Japan. Karate forms part of the multi-sport programme, with competition taking place in Toyohashi.
The karate events run from September 20 through September 30. Athletes compete at the Toyohashi City General Gymnasium in Toyohashi, Aichi.
For Iran, the women’s kata silver adds an important achievement to its Asian Games record. More importantly, the result establishes a new milestone for the country’s women’s kata programme.
The medal could also provide greater visibility for women’s karate in Iran. Furthermore, the result gives the athletes valuable international experience ahead of future continental competitions.
The final result also demonstrates the competitive level of women’s team kata across Asia. Vietnam’s victory underlines its strength, while Iran’s silver confirms its ability to challenge established teams.
As the Asian Games continue, Iranian athletes will seek further opportunities across other karate events. However, the women’s kata medal already represents a landmark moment for Iran at the tournament.
