Iranian football clubs Tractor and Esteghlal will learn their upcoming continental opponents during the official AFC Champions League Elite draw on Tuesday. Asian football officials will conduct the ceremony at the Grand Hyatt in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Consequently, this major event marks a pivotal moment for Iranian clubs seeking continental recognition in regional competitions. Asian football administrators have restructured the competition format to feature 32 qualified clubs in the main stage. Previously, the premier tournament accommodated only 24 top teams across the East and West regional divisions. Therefore, this significant expansion offers additional opportunities for elite Asian clubs to compete at the highest level. In total, 18 member associations have sent teams to represent their respective domestic leagues this year.
Under the updated tournament rules, eight teams will begin the competition in the initial preliminary qualification stage. Subsequently, two winning sides will earn direct spots in the league stage, which begins on September 14. Meanwhile, 14 clubs have secured automatic entry into the main league phase based on coefficient rankings. The secondary Asian competition features 25 teams entering directly into its main group stage. Twelve West Region clubs and 13 East Region clubs have secured direct entry into this secondary tournament. Tournament organizers have scheduled the secondary competition’s opening matches for September 15. Three additional preliminary winners will also join the finalized 26-team group stage.
