Iranian filmmaker Behrouz Afkhami recently announced the commencement of a new documentary project tracking international funeral attendees. The upcoming cinematic production focuses specifically on global citizens traveling to Tehran for state memorial ceremonies. Consequently, the film aims to explore the deep cross-border ideological appeal of the country’s clerical leadership. Production crews have already initiated preliminary filming operations throughout various prominent streets within the capital city.

This ambitious project follows a historical cinematic template that the director established during his earlier career. Approximately four decades ago, Iranian filmmaker Behrouz Afkhami created a similar documentary regarding domestic mourning rituals. That previous film captured the arduous journeys of citizens traveling from remote border regions to Tehran. Those domestic travelers navigated severe transportation shortages to honor the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The director intends to expand this established narrative concept to encompass a broader global audience today. Therefore, the new documentary shifts its creative focus from domestic provincial travelers to international visitors. Travelers from France, the United States, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Turkey form the core of this study. These foreign nationals face immense logistical hurdles, including widespread flight cancellations, to reach the Islamic Republic.

Production teams plan to collaborate closely with various regional embassies and overseas cultural centers to identify subjects. Filmmakers will subsequently attempt to document these international travelers directly from their initial points of departure. Furthermore, the camera crews will accompany the selected individuals throughout their entire journey inside Iran. This immersive methodology allows the production to capture authentic personal motivations and logistical challenges effectively.

The director proposed Champion of the World as the official working title for this production. He explained that global perspectives have shifted regarding the geopolitical impact of the late Iranian leader. Cultural analysts suggest that this project reflects broader efforts to document state history through independent media. Ultimately, the documentary intends to preserve the historical record of these massive state mourning events.

The completed cinematic work will likely circulate through international film festivals and state media distribution channels. Meanwhile, cultural organizations anticipate that the film will generate substantial academic interest regarding regional religious sociology. The production team continues to secure additional funding from domestic cinematic foundations to complete post-production. Observers expect the final editing process to take several months following the conclusion of active filming.
