Approximately 180 Iranian lawmakers signed a joint declaration calling for an end to the recent peace agreement with the United States. The legislative move follows U.S. airstrikes that targeted Iranian territory during the past week. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump declared at a NATO summit that the existing military ceasefire had effectively ended.
The lawmakers pledged to develop defensive measures and seek accountability for the killing of their late revolutionary leader. They also called for the formation of a special parliamentary committee to investigate the collapse of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The committee will monitor the conditions outlined by Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei.
The Iranian Parliament also plans to draft urgent legislation aimed at safeguarding the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The proposal underscores Tehran’s determination to maintain control over one of the world’s most critical shipping routes. In addition, Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused U.S. officials of undermining the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
According to Iranian officials, Washington revoked oil sale licenses and launched airstrikes against military installations on July 7. U.S. Central Command said it struck more than 80 targets, including tactical patrol boats. Iranian officials also claimed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps retaliated by launching attacks against 85 U.S. facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the continued attacks had rendered the diplomatic agreement meaningless. Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf also stated that Tehran would no longer tolerate what he described as Western economic pressure. He said Iran would respond firmly to any future military operations targeting the region.
Pakistani mediators brokered the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding after months of military tensions in February. However, continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon further complicated efforts to implement the agreement. As a result, the Iranian government announced that it would suspend its compliance with the accord.
Analysts warn that the collapse of the agreement could increase tensions across the Middle East. They say international diplomatic efforts will be crucial to preventing a broader regional conflict.
