Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said public support helped the country withstand its recent conflict with the United States and Israel. He also discussed the return of Iranians living abroad and recent national security decisions.
The president made the remarks in a recorded interview marking the second anniversary of his presidency. He described national unity as the country’s greatest source of strength during the conflict.
Pezeshkian said every person living in Iran contributed to that unity. He added that political views, religion, gender, and ethnicity should not divide society. Therefore, he urged officials to preserve national solidarity.
He also discussed earlier talks with former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei about overseas Iranians. According to Pezeshkian, authorities should clearly inform individuals if they cannot enter the country. Otherwise, allowing entry before restricting their movement creates unnecessary uncertainty.
The president said transparent procedures would improve public confidence. Moreover, he called for a predictable legal process covering entry and return for Iranian citizens abroad.
Pezeshkian also commented on Iran’s current leadership structure. He said communication with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei remains difficult under current conditions. Nevertheless, he emphasized that key decisions continue through established institutions.
He explained that the Supreme National Security Council reviews major proposals before reaching final decisions. According to Pezeshkian, the Supreme Leader agreed to accept proposals supported by at least three-quarters of council members.
The president revealed that 12 of the 13 council members supported a memorandum of understanding with the United States. He said the vote demonstrated broad institutional backing for diplomatic engagement.
The proposed memorandum sought to reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington. However, renewed fighting between the two countries soon prevented its implementation.
Political analysts say the interview offers insight into Iran’s decision-making process during a period of regional tensions. They also believe the remarks highlight continued support for diplomacy despite repeated setbacks.
