Russia and Iran are discussing plans to build additional nuclear power plants in Iran, according to Rosatom General Director Alexey Likhachev.
Likhachev said on Tuesday that the two countries are considering projects involving both small and large nuclear power plants. The talks could expand their existing cooperation in Iran’s nuclear energy sector.
Russia and Iran already have experience working together on the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in southwestern Iran. The facility remains a major part of Iran’s civilian nuclear energy program.
Rosatom also announced that the first power unit at the Bushehr plant has been taken offline for scheduled maintenance. Russian specialists will take part in the maintenance work.
Likhachev said around 80 Rosatom employees are currently working at the Bushehr facility. Their presence reflects the continued role of Russian technical teams in supporting the plant.
The latest discussions could mark another step in long-term nuclear cooperation between Moscow and Tehran. However, the two sides have not announced specific locations, construction timelines or final agreements for the proposed new plants.
Russia has maintained close cooperation with Iran on civilian nuclear energy. The Bushehr project has served as the main example of that partnership for years.
Iran continues to develop its nuclear energy sector as part of its broader plans for electricity generation. New nuclear facilities could help expand the country’s power capacity if the projects move forward.
For Russia, new construction projects in Iran could also deepen its role in the country’s nuclear industry. Further negotiations will determine the scale and timing of any future projects.
The discussions come as both countries continue to strengthen economic and technical cooperation. Their nuclear partnership remains an important area of bilateral engagement.
