The vessel, sailing from Sharjah in the UAE to Singapore, changed its course unexpectedly on Friday. As a result, Iranian forces diverted it into their territorial waters. Officials reported that the tanker carried 30,000 tonnes of petrochemical products, which violated Iranian regulations. Therefore, authorities acted swiftly to prevent further legal violations.
The tanker, named Talara, flies a Marshall Islands flag. Additionally, it is managed by a Cyprus-based company and owned by Pasha Finance. The vessel measures approximately 750 feet in length and 105 feet in width. Authorities lost contact with the tanker about 20 nautical miles off Khor Fakkan, UAE, before it entered Iranian waters.
The shipping company immediately informed relevant authorities and coordinated with maritime security agencies and the vessel’s owner. Furthermore, an American defense official confirmed the tanker seizure and its interception by Iranian forces. The UK maritime authorities described the event as potential state activity.
As the tanker approached the Strait of Hormuz, three small boats reportedly guided the vessel, causing it to deviate from its original course. However, British maritime officials observed it moving toward Iranian territorial waters. The reason for the sudden course change is linked to the IRGC’s enforcement of national regulations.
Moreover, the IRGC has a history of detaining commercial vessels in Gulf waters. Their actions often cite smuggling, legal violations, or technical issues. Tehran has repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas shipments. The waterway handles about 20 percent of all traded oil annually.
The region has also experienced heightened tensions in recent years. Conflicts and military strikes involving Iran and neighboring states have increased the frequency of maritime interventions. In April 2024, the IRGC detained another commercial vessel following a cross-border attack.
