Panahi film has earned four Golden Globe nominations, marking a historic moment for Iranian cinema. The film, titled “It Was Just an Accident,” was made by well-known Iranian director Jafar Panahi. It competes for Best Film, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

This is the first time in Golden Globe history that one Iranian film competes in all four major categories. The nominations shine a spotlight on Panahi and Iran’s independent cinema. Golden Globes are among the world’s most important film awards. Nominations often increase a film’s chances at the Oscars. Panahi film now attracts global attention.

The film tells the story of a man who believes he has found his former torturer. He kidnaps the man for revenge but soon doubts his identity. He then seeks confirmation from former prisoners. Panahi made the film secretly, inspired by his own experiences in prison. The film previously won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Panahi filmed the story in Tehran. It will also represent France at the 2026 Oscars. Despite receiving a new prison sentence in Iran, Panahi announced he will return to Iran after the Oscars. His lawyer said the court sentenced him to one year in prison and banned him from travel and political activity. For filmmakers critical of the government, international awards act as protection against censorship.

Panahi previously won the Golden Bear at Berlin for “Taxi” and the Golden Lion at Venice for “Circle.” By winning Cannes, Panahi joined a small group of filmmakers who have earned top awards at Berlin, Venice, and Cannes. Over the years, he has continued producing films quietly under restrictions. Panahi film demonstrates courage, creativity, and the strength of independent cinema. This nomination highlights both Panahi’s talent and the resilience of Iranian filmmakers.
