Iran and Azerbaijan signed a wide-ranging agreement to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure, energy, and economic development. The deal was finalized during the 17th Joint Economic Commission meeting and aims to expand collaboration across ten major sectors, including transport, energy, electricity, water resources, and cultural and social projects.The memorandum was signed by Iran’s Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Farzaneh Sadegh, and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Shahin Mustafayev.
The agreement establishes a clear framework for joint projects and closer ties in multiple areas, reflecting both countries’ desire to boost trade, improve connectivity, and enhance regional cooperation. In transport, the two nations agreed to improve road travel, manage border crossings more effectively, and expand rail connections. These measures will facilitate smoother trade, easier travel, and stronger economic ties. Officials noted that improved transport links will also help businesses and travelers move more efficiently between the two countries.
Energy cooperation is a key part of the agreement. Iran and Azerbaijan will work together on oil blocks one and two, and they established a joint working group to follow up on these projects and ensure implementation. This step aims to increase energy production, encourage investment, and strengthen bilateral relations in the sector. The electricity sector also benefits from the agreement. Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia will connect their power grids, creating a regional network to improve reliability and efficiency. Additionally, Azerbaijan will export electricity to Iran, helping meet growing energy demand and supporting development in both countries.
The agreement also covers social and cultural cooperation. The two sides will collaborate in sports, youth programs, cultural activities, tourism, agriculture, customs, industry, and investment. Officials emphasized that these projects will create new opportunities, strengthen cultural ties, and support economic growth. Both governments stated that the memorandum reflects a long-term commitment to partnership. They hope the agreement will boost trade, improve regional connections, and foster sustainable development. By working together in multiple sectors, Iran and Azerbaijan aim to create practical benefits for their citizens and strengthen the overall relationship between the two nations.
