Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated Iranian leader Mojtaba Khamenei following his recent appointment. Iran’s leader, Mojtaba Khamenei becomes the Islamic Republic’s third supreme leader at age fifty-six. President Barzani emphasized the Region’s commitment to maintaining friendly relations with its neighbor consistently.

In an official message released by his office, Barzani extended “warmest congratulations to Your Excellency and the people.” He also expressed hope for success, stating, “I wish you every success in this new duty and responsibility.” The message highlighted the Region’s interest in peaceful coexistence across borders.

Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was named Iran’s leader on Sunday. Iran’s Assembly of Experts confirmed the appointment, urging “the noble people of Iran” to pledge allegiance promptly. This transition follows the recent aerial campaign by the U.S. and Israel targeting Iran’s senior leaders.

The February 28 strikes killed top Iranian commanders, including the late supreme leader, reshaping the country’s political landscape dramatically. Iran has responded with over two thousand drone strikes and six hundred missiles against U.S. and Israeli positions region-wide. Additional attacks involved Iran-aligned armed groups targeting U.S. positions in Iraq, including areas within the Kurdistan Region.

Despite the ongoing conflict, President Barzani emphasized the Kurdistan Region’s neutrality in the Iran-U.S.-Israel war explicitly. Kurdish officials have repeatedly stated that the Region will not allow its territory to be used as a base for launching attacks on neighboring countries. The Region seeks to maintain stability while fostering historical ties with its neighbor consistently.

Barzani reiterated that the Kurdistan Region “remains committed to developing historical and friendly relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He highlighted the importance of mutual benefit for both peoples and regional peaceful coexistence. Analysts note that these diplomatic gestures aim to balance regional security concerns amid ongoing hostilities.

Observers say Iran’s leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, will face challenges consolidating authority while addressing security escalations across the Gulf. The Kurdistan Region’s cautious approach underscores its intent to preserve autonomy and peaceful relations during the volatile transition. Barzani’s congratulations reflect an effort to maintain dialogue and stability despite regional tensions.
