Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has formally requested global diplomatic support to counter recent military actions by the United States and Israel. The president released a detailed statement addressing Pope Francis to praise the pontiff for taking a principled ethical stance. This diplomatic outreach follows highly significant military developments that have dramatically altered the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. Pezeshkian emphasized that recent actions directly threaten international legal frameworks and broader humanitarian values across the globe.

The current wave of intense hostilities began on February 28 during a series of devastating airstrikes. These initial military operations targeted high-ranking Iranian officials and resulted in the death of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. In response to these assassinations, the Iranian Armed Forces immediately initiated daily missile and drone operations. These retaliatory strikes targeted numerous positions within Israeli-controlled territories alongside several American military installations in the region. Consequently, the escalating violence has raised serious concerns among international observers regarding a prolonged regional war.

Despite the ongoing military operations, Pezeshkian maintained that his administration remains fully committed to diplomatic solutions. He specifically highlighted Iran’s active participation in the recent Islamabad peace talks which Pakistan successfully mediated. The president contrasted this diplomatic willingness with what he characterized as a history of American diplomatic betrayals. Furthermore, Pezeshkian explicitly condemned recent public statements made by United States President Donald Trump regarding Iran’s future. He argued that threats to destroy Iranian civilization reflect an unsustainable reliance on absolute military power.

The conflict has additionally created severe diplomatic friction between Iran and its immediate Persian Gulf neighbors. Pezeshkian explained that western forces utilized regional foreign bases to launch the initial destructive airstrikes against Iran. Therefore, the Iranian military targeted assets inside those neighboring nations purely as a matter of self-defense. The president simultaneously reassured neighboring governments that Iran fundamentally respects their territorial integrity and national sovereignty. He concluded his message by calling on the international community to reject unilateral military policies systematically.

Independent geopolitical analysts suggest that this letter represents an attempt to gather vital diplomatic leverage outside traditional channels. By appealing directly to the Vatican, the Iranian government seeks to frame its defense as a moral necessity. Regional security experts warn that the involvement of third-party territories could destabilize oil markets and shipping lanes. Moving forward, the success of the Pakistan-led mediation efforts will heavily dictate the trajectory of regional stability.
