Iran’s domestically developed Iranian Simorgh aircraft has entered the final certification process. The milestone moves the cargo aircraft closer to commercial operations. Officials expect the aircraft to begin service during the next Iranian calendar year. However, they acknowledged that minor delays could still occur.
The latest update came from the Vice Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy. Officials confirmed financial and technical support continued throughout the previous year. They said the aircraft now undergoes licensing, certification, and compliance reviews. These steps must finish before commercial operations begin.
The Iranian Simorgh aircraft reflects Iran’s effort to strengthen domestic aviation capabilities. International restrictions have limited aircraft purchases and spare parts for years. Therefore, officials consider the project strategically important. They believe it supports long-term transportation and industrial development.
Developers built the aircraft on the Iran-140 platform. They redesigned it specifically for cargo transportation. Consequently, the project aims to expand freight capacity nationwide. It also seeks to improve logistical support through locally developed technology.
Officials described certification as the project’s most important milestone. Engineers continue working with Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries, known as HESA. They also cooperate with the Civil Aviation Organization. Together, they complete technical evaluations and regulatory requirements.
Shokri, Secretary of the Headquarters for the Development of the Knowledge-Based Economy of Aerospace, Transportation, and Urban Development, discussed the project. He said government support fulfilled previous commitments. He also noted that cooperation continues among all participating organizations. They are working to complete either Supplemental Type Certificate or Type Certificate requirements.
Furthermore, Shokri said planners still expect commercial operations during the Iranian year 1406. However, earlier disruptions may slightly affect the schedule. Even so, specialists continue advancing the remaining technical work.
Knowledge-based companies also play a major role in the project. They provide engineering expertise and subsystem manufacturing. They also support testing, technical documentation, certification, and equipment development. Their contributions strengthen domestic industrial capabilities.
Officials believe the partnership demonstrates the growing role of innovative companies. These firms now contribute to major national aerospace projects. Previously, many supplied only individual components. As a result, the project could encourage wider cooperation across Iran’s technology sector.
The Vice Presidency stressed that it serves as a facilitator. It does not own the project. Therefore, project developers and the Civil Aviation Organization will decide the final certification timeline. Their decision will follow the completion of all technical reviews.
Successful certification would allow the Iranian Simorgh aircraft to enter the commercial cargo market. It would also expand domestic freight transportation capacity. Moreover, the project could support future aircraft development. Officials believe it would further strengthen Iran’s aerospace manufacturing industry.
