Researchers say the UNESCO-listed site offers major opportunities for scientific research, education, and sustainable tourism. They shared their findings during a conference celebrating the tenth anniversary of the desert’s World Heritage inscription.
The conference brought together specialists from several academic and research institutions across Iran. Experts in geology, climatology, environmental science, geomorphology, and tourism participated in detailed discussions. They examined the desert’s natural features and explored strategies for responsible long-term management.
Researchers described the Lut Desert as one of the world’s most remarkable natural landscapes. They highlighted its massive yardangs, locally known as kaluts, extensive sand dunes, and broad alluvial plains. Scientists also pointed to rare geological formations that make the area valuable for international research.
Experts explained that these landforms provide exceptional opportunities for university studies and scientific fieldwork. Moreover, they believe the landscape can support carefully managed tourism without harming the fragile ecosystem. They encouraged authorities to balance conservation with responsible economic development.
Scientists also discussed the vast sand deserts found across Iran. They estimated that sandy landscapes cover nearly five million hectares nationwide. Therefore, researchers argued that desert environments should become valuable economic resources instead of remaining overlooked natural areas.
They noted that desert tourism continues gaining popularity worldwide because travelers increasingly seek unique outdoor experiences. Attractions such as dark night skies, peaceful surroundings, and local cultural experiences can attract visitors while supporting nearby communities. The close agreement between field measurements and satellite data further confirmed the desert’s reputation among Earth’s hottest locations. Consequently, researchers consider the region an ideal natural laboratory for climate studies.
