South Korean Ambassador Kim Junpyo said Alamut Castle’s recent inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List could boost international tourism. Speaking at Qazvin Day at the historic Chehel Sotoun complex, he highlighted the site’s global cultural significance. The milestone could further position Qazvin as an international destination for travelers interested in historical heritage.

Ambassador Kim recalled his first diplomatic visit to Qazvin and his early exploration of the famous mountain fortress. He said the surrounding terrain helped explain why ancient invaders struggled to conquer Alamut. He also praised researchers who spent decades preserving the site’s physical remains and documenting its medieval history.

Kim said the inscription process gained momentum after formal discussions during international proceedings in Busan. According to the ambassador, UNESCO recognition could significantly change how the international community views the fortress. Alamut now stands as a shared global heritage site rather than simply a domestic landmark.

The designation marks Iran’s 30th entry on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Historians recognize Alamut as an important political, military, and intellectual center during the medieval Nizari Ismaili period. Local tourism businesses also expect more foreign visitors, including travelers from South Korea.

Long-term recognition will require continued preservation efforts to protect the site and ensure effective management. Collaborative educational programs could help future generations understand Alamut’s complex history. Greater international interest could also support local economic growth and strengthen cultural and diplomatic ties through international tourism.
