Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed regional security during a telephone conversation on Sunday. Their talks focused on the reported attack on an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea, growing regional tensions, and maritime security following recent developments involving the Strait of Hormuz. The discussion underscored continued coordination between Tehran and Moscow on political and security issues affecting regional stability and international trade.

During the call, both ministers reviewed recent regional and international developments. They exchanged views on the reported attack against the Iranian commercial vessel and assessed its potential impact on regional security. Araghchi described the incident as a serious escalation and argued that it violated the principles of the United Nations Charter. He also stressed that Iran would continue protecting its national security, maritime interests, and commercial shipping.

Araghchi warned that attacks targeting civilian merchant vessels could increase instability along important trade routes. Therefore, he called for greater international attention to maritime security and respect for international law. He also reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to safeguarding its economic interests while supporting regional cooperation.

Lavrov strongly condemned the reported attack, saying actions against commercial shipping threaten international legal norms and regional trade. Moreover, he emphasized the importance of holding those responsible accountable and protecting commercial navigation in the Caspian Sea. He added that secure shipping routes remain essential for economic cooperation between neighboring countries.

The ministers also discussed recent developments across the Middle East, including the consequences of what Iran described as the United States’ violation of a memorandum of understanding. In addition, they reviewed ongoing security concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.

The conversation reflected continued diplomatic coordination between Iran and Russia on regional security and economic issues. As tensions persist, both countries appear committed to maintaining close consultations on developments affecting maritime security, trade routes, and political stability across the wider region.
