Iran recorded 128 earthquakes between July 18 and July 24, highlighting the country’s continued exposure to frequent seismic activity. Data released by the seismological networks of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran showed that most earthquakes remained minor, although several stronger tremors also occurred.
According to the latest monitoring report, 113 earthquakes measured below magnitude 3 on the Richter scale. Meanwhile, 10 earthquakes registered between magnitudes 3 and 4, while two reached magnitudes between 4 and 5. In addition, three earthquakes measured between magnitudes 5 and 6 during the reporting period.
The strongest earthquake reached a magnitude of 5.7 and struck Kermanshah province on July 20. Although officials closely monitored the event, the report focused on seismic activity rather than damage assessments or casualty figures.
Kermanshah recorded the highest number of earthquakes nationwide with 34 separate tremors during the week. Yazd ranked second after registering 12 earthquakes, while North Khorasan recorded 11 seismic events. Tehran experienced two earthquakes during the same period, whereas Ardabil, Alborz, South Khorasan, Qom, Qazvin, and Markazi reported no recorded seismic activity.
The latest figures also reflect Iran’s long-term exposure to earthquakes throughout the year. During the previous Iranian calendar year, from March 2025 to March 2026, monitoring stations recorded 2,380 earthquakes measuring above magnitude 2.5. Among those events, 910 exceeded magnitude 3, while 130 measured above magnitude 4. Additionally, 15 earthquakes registered above magnitude 5 on the Richter scale.
Experts continue monitoring seismic activity because Iran sits on several active geological fault lines. The Iranian plateau ranks among the world’s most earthquake-prone regions, making continuous monitoring and preparedness essential. Scientists also emphasize that regular seismic data helps improve hazard assessments, emergency planning, and public safety measures.
Authorities continue expanding monitoring capabilities while encouraging disaster preparedness across vulnerable provinces. Seismologists expect earthquakes to remain a natural feature of the region because of ongoing tectonic movement. Consequently, continuous observation and resilient infrastructure remain essential for reducing future earthquake risks across the country.
