Tehran’s Time Museum recently unveiled a newly restored bronze sphere by renowned Italian artist Arnaldo Pomodoro. The monumental artwork returned to public view following an extensive conservation project that lasted two years. Consequently, cultural authorities timed the high-profile ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the sculptor’s birth. The historic unveiling highlights growing international cooperation between Iranian heritage experts and European art institutions.

The three-thousand-kilogram masterpiece originally arrived in Iran in 1978 after its creation in 1974. However, the heavy sculpture suffered severe surface damage while standing for decades in Tehran’s Eram Park. Authorities later relocated the damaged metal sculpture to the open courtyard of the Time Museum. Therefore, museum officials launched a comprehensive restoration program to stabilize and repair the iconic artwork.

Preliminary scientific studies took seven months to assess the complex metal composition of the damaged sphere. Furthermore, specialist Manijeh Hadian Dehkordi led a multidisciplinary team of Iranian conservators throughout the structural restoration. Mitra Etezadi and her colleagues subsequently joined the technical team to complete the final treatments. Ultimately, close cooperation among multiple heritage specialists ensured the success of the complex conservation project.

The restoration team maintained constant communication with the official Pomodoro Foundation in Italy. Italian experts regularly monitored progress reports and supervised critical treatment stages through online video links. Furthermore, Italian Cultural Attaché Emmanuel Marchi praised the Iranian conservators for their dedicated efforts to preserve the masterpiece. Hamidreza Soleimani, CEO of Dafineh Museums, emphasized that collaborative decisions guided every phase of the restoration.

Born in 1926, Pomodoro earned global acclaim for his distinctive polished sculptures featuring ruptured outer layers. His famous series explores stark contrasts between flawless spherical forms and intricate internal mechanisms. Similar monumental bronze masterpieces currently stand at prominent global landmarks, including the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The successful unveiling of Pomodoro’s restored bronze sphere represents a significant achievement in regional art preservation.

Prominent officials from the Iranian Museums Association and Tehran Municipality attended the formal unveiling ceremony. Moving forward, the restored masterpiece will remain a permanent cultural highlight in northern Tehran. Museum administrators also plan to host educational lectures highlighting international art conservation techniques. Consequently, the restored masterwork will inspire future generations of art historians and museum visitors alike.
