Bread prices in Tehran officially doubled on Monday following a new directive by government regulatory authorities. The Flour and Bread Task Force formally authorized these higher rates across the capital city yesterday. According to council member Mohammad Javad Karami, the cost of subsidized Lavash bread rose sharply from 1400 to 2700 Tomans. Meanwhile, Barbari bread jumped significantly to 10000 Tomans from its previous regulated price of 5300 Tomans. Furthermore, Taftoon prices increased to 4500 Tomans while traditional Sangak bread climbed directly to 15500 Tomans.
This capital city pricing adjustment follows similar regulatory subsidy reductions across several other provinces recently. For instance, authorities in Khorasan Razavi implemented identical localized price hikes for various traditional flatbreads months ago. Production expenses like expensive wheat and higher rental rates primarily forced officials to raise these consumer prices. Additionally, rising utility bills and surging worker wages increased the total operational costs for neighborhood bakers.
Recent statistical data from the Statistical Center of Iran underscores the vast scope of this crisis. Food inflation specifically reached a staggering 130 percent during the previous spring month of Ordibehesht. Therefore, bread prices in domestic bakeries had to rise to prevent widespread business closures across Tehran.
