Iran’s Esteghlal FC ended their AFC Champions League Two campaign after a dramatic Round of 16 tie against Jordan’s Al Hussein. The Iranian side lost 4–2 on aggregate following a 3–2 defeat in the second leg. Their hopes of a deep continental run this season came to an abrupt halt.

Esteghlal entered the knockout phase with high hopes. They had progressed from Group A with strong performances and key victories. Their group stage included a convincing 3–0 win that secured their Round of 16 spot. The team’s attacking style and disciplined organization had earned praise and raised expectations for the knockout stage.

The first leg proved challenging. Esteghlal were narrowly beaten 1–0 away, leaving them with an uphill task in the return match. In Tehran, the team struck early. Jasir Asani converted a penalty to give Esteghlal the lead. This goal offered hope of overturning the deficit and putting pressure on the visitors. The Iranian side continued to press and created several scoring opportunities.

Al Hussein responded quickly. Ali Hajabi scored a header to equalize, restoring the aggregate lead for the Jordanian side. Asani’s second goal briefly put Esteghlal back in contention. However, Al Hussein struck twice more. Yousef Abualjazarscored first, and Obieda Al Namarnah sealed the victory in stoppage time. Esteghlal’s comeback hopes were extinguished.

Despite moments of brilliance, defensive lapses proved costly. Esteghlal’s elimination highlights the fine margins of knockout football. The team showed resilience and attacking intent, but the visitors’ determination made the difference. The defeat marks a disappointing end to Esteghlal’s continental campaign. Still, the team can take lessons from their performances. Their effort and ambition were evident, and there are areas to build on for future competitions. Fans can remain optimistic as Esteghlal looks ahead to the next season.
