Four historic Iranian water structures earned prestigious recognition under the World Heritage Irrigation Structures program. Organizers will host the formal presentation during the 26th ICID International Congress in Marseille, France, this October. The upcoming gathering focuses on agricultural resilience and sustainable water practices amid ongoing global climate change. The initiative honors structures over a century old that display outstanding archival, historical, or technological value.
The designated sites demonstrate distinct civil engineering approaches spanning several key historical eras. Built during the Safavid era, Si-o-se-pol integrated urban bridge architecture with active river flow management in Isfahan. Meanwhile, the medieval Band-e Amir barrage in Fars raised river levels to power agricultural waterwheels efficiently.
Ancient engineering traditions excel further at Khuzestan’s Shadorvan Grand Weir within the UNESCO-listed Shushtar hydraulic system. Additionally, coastal Siraf features sophisticated rainfall harvesting systems, cisterns, and wells that sustained trade in arid Bushehr. Recent interdisciplinary studies confirm that Siraf integrated domestic water collection directly into its broader urban planning.
These four additions expand Iran’s total presence on the global register to sixteen recognized historical structures. Worldwide, the program currently catalogs over two hundred historic irrigation works across participating nations. Moving forward, global experts will study these ancient Iranian systems to derive modern sustainable water management solutions.
