Iran has formally challenged Rafael Grossi’s suitability for the UN leadership role, citing serious concerns over neutrality. The country stressed that future UN leaders must defend international law without political pressure. As a result, Iran linked credibility directly to the UN leadership role in global governance.

During a Security Council session, Iran’s UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, outlined Tehran’s expectations clearly. He emphasized that UN leadership must reflect independence, integrity, and firm commitment to the Charter. Moreover, he warned that silence during violations weakens international trust.

First, Iravani addressed Article 99 of the UN Charter. He argued that the Secretary-General failed to act decisively during major regional crises. Consequently, Iran believes this inaction reduced the UN’s authority and moral standing.

Next, Iravani focused on Article 100. He stated that the next UN chief must act independently from powerful states. Furthermore, he warned that failure to condemn unlawful military attacks signals political bias. He said such conduct damages confidence in any UN leadership role.

He directly referenced recent strikes against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. According to Iran, those sites operated under international supervision. However, Iran criticized the IAEA leadership for remaining silent. Therefore, Tehran questioned Grossi’s ability to serve impartially.

In addition, Iravani highlighted Article 105 of the Charter. He stressed the duty to protect diplomats’ rights and privileges. Moreover, he criticized visa restrictions and movement limitations imposed on some delegations. He argued that unequal treatment undermines sovereign equality.

Iran also called for a transparent and inclusive selection process. In this context, Iravani expressed readiness for constructive engagement. He said Iran seeks cooperation with a Secretary-General committed to justice and peace.

Meanwhile, the UN leadership role traditionally excludes candidates from permanent Security Council members. Although no formal term limit exists, historical practice favors leadership continuity without concentration of power. Therefore, the next selection carries institutional significance.

Experts say Iran’s position reflects broader concerns about UN reform. In particular, debates continue over neutrality and accountability within international organizations. As a result, this challenge could influence wider diplomatic discussions.

Looking ahead, Iran signaled continued engagement in the selection process. Ultimately, Tehran aims to strengthen multilateral institutions through principled leadership. The outcome may shape perceptions of the UN leadership role worldwide.
