Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf publicly criticized U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday over his recent sanctions rhetoric. Ghalibaf mocked the American official following a press briefing unveiling a comprehensive campaign dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast.” Consequently, the public exchange highlighted the ongoing geopolitical friction between Washington and Tehran following recent military clashes.

During the initial policy presentation, Secretary Bessent characterized the new economic measures as an “historic economic onset.” However, media representatives quickly questioned why Washington had delayed imposing immediate secondary sanctions on major international trading partners. In response to reporters’ questions, Bessent asked why he would want to “blow up the global financial system.”

Ghalibaf seized on the apparent contradiction in a statement shared across international social media platforms. The Iranian parliamentary leader sarcastically likened the Treasury Department’s strategic messaging to an unscripted comedy performance. Furthermore, he emphasized that current diplomatic realities bear no resemblance to the military operations of World War II.

The economic confrontation follows a period of intense military friction involving American and Israeli forces across the region. Iranian defense forces conducted extensive retaliatory operations that ultimately prompted initial calls for regional ceasefires. Subsequent disputes over maritime transit rights through the Strait of Hormuz have further escalated diplomatic tensions.

Iranian economic officials confirmed that state institutions have developed comprehensive countermeasures to mitigate the impact of external trade restrictions. Simultaneously, major global trading powers have publicly rejected unilateral economic actions lacking international authorization. Ultimately, Iranian leaders assert that continued economic pressure will fail to force domestic political concessions.
