Iranians gathered across the country to support the new Supreme Leader during the Iranian leadership transition. As a result, large crowds expressed loyalty to Mojtaba Khamenei during coordinated demonstrations. First, people filled the streets and public squares in Tehran and several other cities. Meanwhile, demonstrators waved national flags and chanted political slogans.
Thousands also assembled at Enqelab Square in central Tehran. There, participants said the gathering showed unity during a tense national moment. In addition, officials reported similar rallies in Shiraz, Kerman, Ahvaz, and Tabriz. Likewise, residents marched in Hamedan and Ardabil.
At the same time, crowds gathered in the religious center of Qom. There, clerics and seminary students joined the demonstrations. Moreover, participants said they wanted to reaffirm loyalty to the country’s leadership. Therefore, many publicly pledged support for the new Supreme Leader.
Meanwhile, the rallies followed a major decision by the Assembly of Experts. Specifically, the clerical body selected Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s next leader. Notably, the assembly includes 88 senior clerics who supervise leadership succession. After urgent internal discussions, members finalized the leadership decision.
Consequently, Mojtaba Khamenei became the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. He therefore succeeds his father, Ali Khamenei. However, the leadership change came during escalating regional tensions. Israeli strikes reportedly killed Ali Khamenei in Tehran.
Following the incident, Iranian officials blamed Israel for the attack. Furthermore, authorities accused the United States of supporting the military campaign. According to government statements, airstrikes damaged infrastructure and civilian locations. As a result, officials reported more than 1,300 deaths nationwide.
Immediately afterward, authorities formed a temporary leadership council. The council managed state affairs until clerics selected a permanent successor. Currently, the Iranian leadership transition unfolds during heightened regional tensions. At the same time, military activity continues across the Middle East.
In response, Iranian forces launched retaliatory missile and drone operations. Officials said those strikes targeted Israeli positions and American assets in the region. During the rallies, many participants supported those military responses. In fact, several speakers praised the armed forces and demanded continued resistance.
Meanwhile, analysts say the demonstrations carry strong political symbolism. Overall, they show public backing during the Iranian leadership transition. Looking ahead, observers expect the new leader to shape future policies soon. Consequently, regional governments will closely watch Tehran’s next strategic decisions.
